Calgary Folk Music provides information about folk music in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

CKUA is Alberta's best darn radio station, plays lots of folk and roots music, and you can listen online if you like.

FAMI (Foothills Acoustic Music Institute) provides spring, summer and fall acoustic music camps near Bragg Creek, Alberta.

Bragg Creek Performing Arts provides music concerts in Bragg Creek Alberta.

Bragg Creek Festival is an annual festival in Bragg Creek, Alberta.

Western Canada

Western Canadian Music Awards has information on applying for these annual awards, as well as showcasing at their conference.

Folk Alliance Canada  has information on events and showcases sponsored by FAC.

Northern Journey  is a comprehensive site featuring, articles, performer reviews and discographies and many Canadian links to performers and venues.

Canadian Society For Traditional Music provides the CSTM catalogue of Canadian recordings, CSTM publications and many external folk music links.

The Canadian Folk Music Awards recognize the musical achievements of Canada's roots music community with a broad range of awards in different categories..

Juno Awards  Canada's annual music awards showcase has searchable links to Canadian award winners.

Ontario Council of Folk Festivals has links to all the festivals in Ontario, plus information on their annual conference.

Galaxie could be what radio will be in the next millennium.  It is a network of 30 national channels, commercial free and sans DJs, distributed mainly via the ExpressVu direct-to-home (DTH) subscription satellite TV service.

International

Folk Music  features links to performers, venues, organizations, listservs, and many other folk links.

Musi-Cal  provides a searchable data base for music events being presented anywhere!  You can search by performer, venue, location and date.  Venues and performers can add listings for upcoming events.

Folk Alliance International exists to foster and promote traditional, contemporary, and multicultural folk music and dance, and related performing arts in North America.  The Folk Alliance seeks to strengthen and advance organizational and individual initiatives in folk music and dance through education, networking, advocacy, professional development and field development.

Folk Alliance Australia  Tired of freezing?  There's lots of folk music happening in Australia. This site has links to many venues and festivals in Oz.

Music Business

Alberta Foundation For The Arts  provides a FAQ page - "Information on the Grants Process" and an overview of programs available through the foundation.  Charts provide information on the various grant categories available to performers and arts organizations.  Of interest to performers would be grants to provide funding for educational touring in Alberta schools, in-province touring, and sound recording.

The Canada Council offers an extensive overview of a huge number of available programs, grants and publications.  Of interest to performers would be outreach program listings of provincial and international contact events and publications which include directories for festivals and presenters, agents and publicists and national media.  There are grants available for music touring, market development, festival travel and in some cases, sound recording.  Settle in for a long browse at this site.

Factor provides downloadable grant application forms to assist Canadian performers in production of recordings.

SOCAN  (The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada)  is the agency that collects and distributes royalties from airplay, concerts and many other sources, to Canadian songwriters and publishers.

Folk Listservs

For those interested in ongoing discussions of folk music and business, there are a variety of listservs to which you can freely subscribe.  As a member of a listserv, your single e-mail posting is automatically e-mailed to every subscriber to the list and you likewise receive everyone else's postings.  On the best lists, evolving discussions can be very illuminating.  Participation is not necessary.  You can "lurk" and simply read other's postings if you wish.  If you choose to subscribe to any of the lists below you will receive a confirmation including options and instructions on how to unsubscribe.

Maple Post is a mailing list for members of Folk Alliance Canada and the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (OCFF).   All members and friends of these organizations, and music industry associates, are invited to participate.  The focus of Maple Post is Canadian folk music industry news and views, oriented to performers, agents, event organizers, record companies, recording industry specialists, radio hosts, reviewers and writers. FolkVenu is for people who are interested in live folk, bluegrass, and Celtic music. Subscribers include people involved in coffeehouses, clubs, concert halls, festivals, and other venues, as well as folk performers, managers, and others.  This listserv is an opportunity for us to compare notes on such topics as bookings, promotions, finances, contracts, and general operations.  Presenters also can share their schedules for the season and post short reviews of shows, while artists and managers can use the list to aid in scheduling. In addition, presenters who are seeking ways of contacting artists and managers have the opportunity of sharing this information to expedite booking. FolkDJ-L is an electronic discussion group for DJs and other people interested in all folk-based music (bluegrass, old-timey, traditional balladry, traditional international music, singer-songwriters, etc.) on the radio. Although the original idea behind the list was to give radio people a forum to discuss topics of common interest, our group isn't limited to show hosts -- we also welcome listeners, performers, record company people and reviewers.
