They are a study in contrasts. Cara Luft, wholesome, ebullient and engaging; and JD Edwards looking like a cross between a biker and long-haul trucker. At first glance few would peg them for a highly creative musical partnership. And yet, with a dozen criticallyacclaimed albums between them, they have teamed up to form The Small Glories. Juno Award winner, co-founder of folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys, Cara Luft has earned a solid reputation as an exciting live performer, accomplished guitarist, clawhammer banjo player, and insightfully honest songwriter. Her style of presentation combines her appealingly infectious personality and wild sense of humour with mesmerizing songcraft. Fronting the JD Edwards Band since 2006, JD is a versatile singer/songwriter who has earned praise far and wide for his down home, straightforward songwriting style and superb vocal ability in a variety of genres, from country and blues to folk and rock.
In September it was announced that The Small Glories had been honored with two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for English Songwriter of the Year and New Emerging Artist of the Year.
Andrew first caught our ears as a member of Smith, Funk & Strauss and later in an accomplished indie-folk duo with his son Zachari. His instrumental CD escape velocity won him the Okanagan Instrumental Artist Award and has been nominated for many international awards. He is one of the few Canadians to have won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competition with his songs Rite of Passage and Holes in the Night Sky.
