Next Concert Maeve Mackinnon – March 23

Maeve Mackinnon

The next concert of our 2012-2013 season will feature Maeve Mackinnon with opening act Karen Sim.

Tickets can be purchased online at Pumphouse Theatre Nickelodeon Tickets.

All Nick concerts are held at the Crescent Heights Community Hall, 1101 2nd St. N.W. Doors open at 7:00 and showtime is 7:30.

Even amid the wealth of gifted musicians thronging today’s Scottish folk scene, singer Maeve Mackinnon stands out as an exceptional young talent. She’s been a three-time nominee for Gaelic Singer of the Year and winner of the Up and Coming Artist of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards. With a repertoire spanning Gaelic and English-language material, both traditional and contemporary, she’s won acclaim equally for the eloquent emotional connection she forges with every song, communicated in a bewitchingly honeyed, husky yet vibrantly earthy voice, and for her music’s dynamic interplay of boldness and sensitivity.  Maeve will be accompanied at the Nick by Brian McAlpine on keyboards and accordion and Ross Martin on guitar.

Karen Sim

Karen has had the good fortune to play and perform with some of the most talented and eclectic performers around, from theater orchestras and Calgary Opera, to beat poets, improv world musicians, and punk alternative bands. She has embraced numerous genres and styles to add to her repertoire, always searching for new collaborations to stretch her imagination. Her current style embraces jazz, gypsy, celtic and blues and is constantly evolving.  Karen has released two albums, Estryne and the newly released Pedestrian.

Patrons’ Night Submissions
Haida Gwaii cabin and Martin D-18

On April 27th the Nick will host our first Patrons’ Night, an opportunity for season ticket holders, regular patrons and volunteers to take to the Nick stage to present some music for our appreciative audience.

Current season ticket holders will qualify for admittance and advance tickets will be sold at a reduced price for this evening.  Persons chosen to perform will gain free admittance for themselves and a guest, and we’ll provide some liquid courage as well.

We plan to run the same 40 to 45 minute, three set format, with breaks in between.  Our technical crew will provide each performer with vocal mic and instrument amplification as needed.

What we envision is an “in the round” setting, like a festival session stage, where three or four individuals or acts are on stage simultaneously.  Each would present a song in turn and each would have the opportunity to present two or three songs (10 to 15 minutes per act), during their set.

With this format we can likely accommodate a dozen acts at the most so, depending on the numbers interested in performing, we may need to limit those who take to the stage via an audition process.

Similarly, this format will work best for solo or duo performances.  We cannot easily accommodate large ensembles.

I am currently aware of interest among some of our volunteers.  These include musicians who have released, or are working on CD’s, and have performed at outside venues and festivals. I’m also aware of patrons who are interested, whose on-stage experience is limited to an occasional open stage performance.  The door is open for everyone.

Over the next month, I’d like to get expressions of interest from folks wanting to participate in this evening of music.  Please send an e-mail to <vicbell@telusplanet.net> with the subject line “Nick Patrons’ Night”.

Depending on the level of interest, the deadline for submitting will be by the end of our March 23rd concert at the Nick.    We want to avoid a complex selection process and may choose to close our submission window early if we start to get too many submissions.  Once you have submitted an expression of interest in participating, we will be in touch with you.

In your e-mail, please specify your format (solo, duo), instrumentation (guitar, banjo, keyboard, accapella) and your live performance experience (folk club, commercial venue, open stage, round the campfire).  If you have a recording or video of yourself available, please mention that, but I won’t need that from you at this time.

Once we have a better sense of how many people are interested in participating, we’ll be able to work out how this evening will be programmed.

Further announcements re the Nick Patrons’ Night will be made at the Nick and here on our website.
