Kat Danser

Kat Danser

Kat Danser: Kat Danser’s music navigates a paddle steamer from the muddy banks of the Mississippi Delta downriver toward a big ol’ full moon over New Orleans. Dubbed ‘Queen of the Swamp Blues’, this guitar slinger, songsmith, and blazing vocalist channels the spirit of roots, blues and gospel music pioneers. Her fourth album, Baptized by the Mud, addresses the dichotomy of ‘church-blues’: blues music as devilish and church music as angelic. This sub-genre demonstrates that human truth and the divine are one in the same – “one is preached from behind the pulpit and the other from behind the plow”.

Jon Brooks: With a death count of 75 The Smiling and Beautiful Countryside is an album of rural Canadian murder ballads that defies categorization and resists any ‘folk,’ ‘singer-songwriter,’ or ‘solo acoustic’ description. Equal parts local Canadiana and universal horror, it buries all the trademark Jon Brooks social commentary in a shallow, roadside grave. Philosophical paradox, gallows humour, impossible love, titillating gore, adulterous sex, serial killers, gun dealers, rampage killing, missing women, First Nations catastrophe, necrophilia, Shakespeare, and John Milton: This is neither an album for casual fans nor is it music that will ever be heard in your dentist’s waiting room.

T. Buckley Trio

T. Buckley Trio

The T. Buckley Trio: The T. Buckley Trio delivers soulful laments and gritty truths, wrapped in a cowboy blanket to create a distinct western Canadian flavour. The trio features T. Buckley as the band’s lead vocalist and principle songwriter, winner of the 2010 Calgary Folk Festival songwriting contest; Derek Pulliam, on stand-up bass and vocals and Tim Leacock on electric guitar, mandolin and vocals. The band brings a more-than memorable stage presence and harmonies that create a sound much larger than their modest stage set up. The band’s latest recording, Northern Country Soul, charted No. 1 on both CKUA and CJSW.

A New Season Is Coming!

Firstly, thank you all the new volunteers who have stepped forward to assist our Nick operations.  Like folk venues and festivals everywhere, we depend on the labour of love of regular folks to cover all the tasks, large and small, that are a part of bringing great music to our community.  A big tip ‘o the hat to all!

We’ve had a couple of headliner disappointments, both The Once and Catherine MacLellan had to cancel due to touring conflicts.  The Once will be coming through Calgary in December touring with The Vinyl Cafe and performing two nights at the Jubilee. The good news is, we are re-scheduling, and they will be back at the Nick for our following season.

With cancellations comes replacements, and I’m pleased to note that on November 28, fabulous Nova Scotia entertainers Evans and Doherty will be making their Nick debut. On January 23, one of the world’s finest guitarists, Tony McManus, will make his debut performance at the Nick.

We’ll be having lots of debut performances at the Nick this fall, including a couple of sweet singing, young women trios, Trent Severn and The Sweet Lowdown .  We’re also happy to bring back long time Nick veterans like Stephen Fearing, who first performed as an opening act in 1986, and Bill Bourne who first headlined at the Nick way back in 1981.

Tickets for all of our fall concerts will go on sale through Brown Paper Tickets. on September 11.  Tickets for all of our new year shows will go on sale on December 11.

Please join us for our first concert on October 3 with Trent Severn and opening act Ann Vriend.

Urgent, We Need Volunteers!

The Nick is facing a serious dilemma. With the 2015-16 season fast approaching, we find ourselves in the unenviable position of experiencing a severe lack of volunteers. In our past season many volunteers were undertaking double or even triple duty in order to fill in for empty positions. Despite efforts to recruit new volunteers, several key people have resigned for health, moves and other personal reasons. Without these key positions being filled, the Nick cannot operate as it has for the past 35 years.

As committed as we are to ensuring that the show must go on, without more recruits it is hard to envision how this will occur. We have some great performers confirmed and we have a wonderful team of volunteers already, and we need more! We want to encourage our loyal patrons to consider volunteering and to talk to friends and family and invite them to join us. Volunteering at the Nick is a responsibility, but it’s also a lot of great fun!

Key positions that are now vacant include that of Treasurer, Volunteer Coordinator, Kitchen Coordinator, Main Course Cook, Admissions Coordinator, Website Coordinator, Newsletter Coordinator, and Merchandise Coordinator.  Adding to this list we also find ourselves without a Popcorn Maker, Kitchen Server and Set-up/Take Down Crew.

With the voice of an angel, Lizzy delivers music and stories with soaring melodies rooted in Celtic and folk traditions. Her fourth album, New Lady on the Prairie demonstrates a mature and refined ‘transatlantic’ sound that blends influences from Celtic, bluegrass and folk traditions. The title track, inspired by Lizzy’s great great aunt immigrating to Canada from Ireland in the early 1900s, demonstrates her ability to craft songs that are touching, poignant, and lyrically rich.
