Haida Gwaii cabin and Martin D-18

The final concert of our 2012-2013 season will present our first ever Nickelodeon Patrons’ Night, featuring performances by 12 patrons and Nick volunteers.  Several of our performers have released, or are working on CD’s and some have only played ’round the campfire.  Each set will see the performers on stage together and they’ll play, in the round, with each act doing two songs.  At the end of the third set we’ll invite all of the performers from all three sets back to the stage to perform a finale song we can all sing together with the audience.

$15 tickets can be purchased online at Pumphouse Theatre Nickelodeon Tickets.  Nick Season Ticket holders can gain admission to this special event as always.

All Nick concerts are held at the Crescent Heights Community Hall, 1101 2nd St. N.W. Doors open at 7:00 and showtime is 7:30.

Their breakout album, Red Wing, was nominated for five Independent Music Awards in 2010 and with their latest album, Lay Down, Lay Low, The Steel Wheels have continued to capture audiences across the country with their heady brew of original soulful mountain music and their deep commitment to roots and community. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this dynamic four-piece string band marries old-time musical traditions with their own innovative sound and lifestyle, generating a truly magnetic revival. The band is renowned for their raw energy and chemistry on stage, where they often cluster tightly around a single microphone to adorn Trent Wagler’s unmistakable tenor with bell-clear four-part harmonies inspired by their shared Mennonite heritage. Add to this Eric Brubaker’s lively and evocative fiddle, Brian Dickel’s grounded yet buoyant upright bass, and Jay Lapp’s signature mandolin style, and it’s no surprise that The Steel Wheels have enthralled the contemporary Americana scene.

Ida Red

Robbie Bankes and William Lynch met 4 years ago after discovering by coincidence a mutual passion for folk and Celtic music. They first embarked on their musical journey, under the name Robbie & Will, busking at the market every other weekend, and have since pleased the Calgary area with their energized sets. Always on the search for new genres and sounds to explore, they love to shake things up with off beat tunes and improvisation. Now known as Ida Red, they have joined forces with fiddler Brigitte Ouellet to present an inventive approach to traditional music and original tunes and songs.

Even amid the wealth of gifted musicians thronging today’s Scottish folk scene, singer Maeve Mackinnon stands out as an exceptional young talent. She’s been a three-time nominee for Gaelic Singer of the Year and winner of the Up and Coming Artist of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards. With a repertoire spanning Gaelic and English-language material, both traditional and contemporary, she’s won acclaim equally for the eloquent emotional connection she forges with every song, communicated in a bewitchingly honeyed, husky yet vibrantly earthy voice, and for her music’s dynamic interplay of boldness and sensitivity.  Maeve will be accompanied at the Nick by Brian McAlpine on keyboards and accordion and Ross Martin on guitar.

Karen Sim

Karen has had the good fortune to play and perform with some of the most talented and eclectic performers around, from theater orchestras and Calgary Opera, to beat poets, improv world musicians, and punk alternative bands. She has embraced numerous genres and styles to add to her repertoire, always searching for new collaborations to stretch her imagination. Her current style embraces jazz, gypsy, celtic and blues and is constantly evolving.  Karen has released two albums, Estryne and the newly released Pedestrian.

Patrons’ Night Submissions
Haida Gwaii cabin and Martin D-18

On April 27th the Nick will host our first Patrons’ Night, an opportunity for season ticket holders, regular patrons and volunteers to take to the Nick stage to present some music for our appreciative audience.

Current season ticket holders will qualify for admittance and advance tickets will be sold at a reduced price for this evening.  Persons chosen to perform will gain free admittance for themselves and a guest, and we’ll provide some liquid courage as well.

We plan to run the same 40 to 45 minute, three set format, with breaks in between.  Our technical crew will provide each performer with vocal mic and instrument amplification as needed.

What we envision is an “in the round” setting, like a festival session stage, where three or four individuals or acts are on stage simultaneously.  Each would present a song in turn and each would have the opportunity to present two or three songs (10 to 15 minutes per act), during their set.

With this format we can likely accommodate a dozen acts at the most so, depending on the numbers interested in performing, we may need to limit those who take to the stage via an audition process.

Similarly, this format will work best for solo or duo performances.  We cannot easily accommodate large ensembles.

I am currently aware of interest among some of our volunteers.  These include musicians who have released, or are working on CD’s, and have performed at outside venues and festivals. I’m also aware of patrons who are interested, whose on-stage experience is limited to an occasional open stage performance.  The door is open for everyone.

Over the next month, I’d like to get expressions of interest from folks wanting to participate in this evening of music.  Please send an e-mail to <vicbell@telusplanet.net> with the subject line “Nick Patrons’ Night”.

Depending on the level of interest, the deadline for submitting will be by the end of our March 23rd concert at the Nick.    We want to avoid a complex selection process and may choose to close our submission window early if we start to get too many submissions.  Once you have submitted an expression of interest in participating, we will be in touch with you.

In your e-mail, please specify your format (solo, duo), instrumentation (guitar, banjo, keyboard, accapella) and your live performance experience (folk club, commercial venue, open stage, round the campfire).  If you have a recording or video of yourself available, please mention that, but I won’t need that from you at this time.

Once we have a better sense of how many people are interested in participating, we’ll be able to work out how this evening will be programmed.

Further announcements re the Nick Patrons’ Night will be made at the Nick and here on our website.

His straight-talking tunes weave together folk, roots, blues, country and soul influences, whether stripped down to fingerpicked acoustic guitar, banjo, ukulele, and foot percussion, or backed by his 5-piece band The Long Weekends. He has been making a full-time living at music since 2007, traveling the continent while living out of his van, and is currently touring in support of his third solo album, Moonlit Rambles.

From the Great Northern Plains, Juno nominated Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whether it’s songs about passion or songs about panties, she writes about real things in a rooted and poetic way.  Higgins will be accompanied by an old-school horn section, guitar, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, muck-bucket bass, and chunky percussion.

Jane Hawley

Stints with bands like Jr. Gone Wild and Beautiful Joe led Jane to performances across the country including a two month tour opening for Jann Arden. The songs on Jane’s fourth CD, Jane Hawley & Aunt Betty’s Band, reflect her rural adventures. The song Big Sky was written while Jane and her husband moved fifty bull by horseback up off the river bank to a new summer pasture. Shopping for Love was written after experiencing the biggest social event in her community, coupon day at the local town grocery store. Jane’s music has been described as “Kitty Wells meets the Rolling Stones”.

Canadian folk-pop troubadour Jeremy Fisher first broke onto the scene a decade ago, and since then his career has been on a steady upward trajectory. Listening to Mint Juleps, the fifth album by the two-time Juno Award nominee is like ambling through the long and relaxed dog days of summer. He stands out by creating art rooted in timeless imagery, dressed with a consummate wit, honesty and lightheartedness. He is without a doubt a modern-day folk hero who is bringing back the nearly forgotten art of making a great record from start to finish, and forging a career path that is built to endure.
