Indie songster Emm Gryner is a three time Juno nominee. Multi-talented Juno nominee Dayna Manning toured with Joe Cocker and Burton Cummings. Violin whiz/songbird Laura C. Bates performed at Massey Hall and The Glenn Gould Studio. Together they are a Canadiana band based in folk, roots and old country whose songs are fueled by the folklore of Ontario; whose lyrics pay tribute to Canadian legends. Their lyrics seamlessly offer inside jokes Canadians will laugh at, yet nothing a welcome visitor couldn’t relate to and enjoy. Their debut album earned two 2013 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Vocal Group of the Year and New Emerging Artist of the Year. This fall they will release their second CD, Trillium. Trent Severn are three treasured and talented musicians who have years of experience touring this country and getting to know audiences, a seed that blooms to life on a Canadian stage.

A New Season Is Coming!

Firstly, thank you all the new volunteers who have stepped forward to assist our Nick operations.  Like folk venues and festivals everywhere, we depend on the labour of love of regular folks to cover all the tasks, large and small, that are a part of bringing great music to our community.  A big tip ‘o the hat to all!

We’ve had a couple of headliner disappointments, both The Once and Catherine MacLellan had to cancel due to touring conflicts.  The Once will be coming through Calgary in December touring with The Vinyl Cafe and performing two nights at the Jubilee. The good news is, we are re-scheduling, and they will be back at the Nick for our following season.

With cancellations comes replacements, and I’m pleased to note that on November 28, fabulous Nova Scotia entertainers Evans and Doherty will be making their Nick debut. On January 23, one of the world’s finest guitarists, Tony McManus, will make his debut performance at the Nick.

We’ll be having lots of debut performances at the Nick this fall, including a couple of sweet singing, young women trios, Trent Severn and The Sweet Lowdown .  We’re also happy to bring back long time Nick veterans like Stephen Fearing, who first performed as an opening act in 1986, and Bill Bourne who first headlined at the Nick way back in 1981.

Old Man Luedecke

Old Man Luedecke’s CD’s Proof of Love and My Hands are on Fire and Other Love Songs both won Roots and Traditional Solo Juno Awards.  His latest album, Tender Is The Night, goes beyond his beloved solo, banjo-driven folk tunes. Driving a Nashville band from beginning to end, this is an artist honing his cunning lyrical flair – tenderly pushing the boundaries of his storytelling with his unique mix of folk, bluegrass and pop hooks.  With skillful precision and a storyteller’s heart, Luedecke’s narrative-driven folk songs are playful, coy, and soul warming. Rich in metaphor, heart and instrumentation, Tender Is The Night muses on love, art and purpose.  The album received two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Contemporary Singer of the Year and English Songwriter of the Year and won two East Coast Music Awards for Folk Recording of the year and Album of the Year.
