Their songs earned the duo the Grand Prize in the 2010 Maxell John Lennon Song Writing Contest. MacIsaac and MacEachern first met at an artists’ hangout in Toronto in the late 1990’s. The Knight Sessions is a mix of stripped back, acoustic takes on some of their more upbeat musings as well as a new batch of poetic and heartfelt tunes. When you hear them, the first thing you’ll notice is that their voices blend together, symbiotically, like family: Born to sing the same songs. Carlos del Junco

Carlos del Junco

Master of the diatonic harmonica, simultaneously sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz (hence the name for his band The Blues Mongrels). The emphasis is on blues, but Carlos and his band are not afraid to merrily traipse off in other directions delivering a seamless fusion of New Orleans second-line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies, and swampy roots rock. Carlos blows the blues harp through a prism, suddenly it seems he’s holding every color in the musical rainbow right there in his hands. Early on, del Junco was immersed in a visual arts career; majoring in sculpture. This has definitely had an influence on his outlook on music: “Music is just a different way of creating textures and shapes.” His sophisticated sound is at once sensitive, soulful, and sexy while never forgetting the rawness inherent in blues music.

Trad Trio

Trad Trio

Trad Trio is made up of Kenny Stewart on guitar, banjo and vocals; Rodger Leeder on mandolin and vocals; and Heather Cameron on fiddle, guitar and vocals. A native of Nova Scotia, Heather grew up in a musical family exposed to a number of musical styles. Heather has mastered piano, fiddle, bagpipes and guitar and has a beautiful clear voice. Her latest project is a collaboration with J.P. Cormier, resulting in her first full-length album, Never Land. It features an exciting mix of traditional and contemporary tunes, with a blend of Irish, Scottish, Maritime and folk tunes in the mix.

John Reischman and the Jaybirds

John Reischman and the Jaybirds

Like the powerful mandolinist and composer at its helm, John Reischman and the Jaybirds fashion a stylish take on bluegrass that seamlessly blends original songs and instrumentals with Appalachian old-time music for a truly unique band sound, sometimes bluesy, sometimes folky, sometimes hard-edged, sometimes haunting. The Jaybirds feature Patrick Sauber on guitar, Trisha Gagnon on bass, Nick Hornbuckle on banjo and Greg Spatz on fiddle. Now in their 20th year, the Jaybirds are simultaneously innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned and 21st-century contemporary. The Jaybirds put their own particular stamp on bluegrass, old time and acoustic roots music, with a satisfying blend of traditional and modern styles. There’s plenty here to please both bluegrass traditionalists and lovers of modern American folk music, especially for those with an appreciation of great harmony singing as well as masterful instrumental playing.

The Young Novelists are a five-piece, folk-roots band, formed in August 2009. Self Portrait with Sweatshirt

Self Portrait with Sweatshirt

Dan Bern is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and painter. He is convincing, funny and timely, with an unassuming tip of the hat to the spirits of past greats, all while sounding fresh and original. Dan’s songs pack a punch, and are engaging and often cinematic. His music has been compared to that of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs and Elvis Costello. Bern’s song Talkin’ Woody, Bob, Bruce, and Dan Blues, from the album Smartie Mine, offers a joking take on this influence, in the style of a Guthrie or Dylan talking blues song, and containing a spoof of a Springsteen song as well. When asked about the similarity between himself and Dylan, he once quipped, “I guess Bob Dylan was sort of the Dan Bern of the ‘60s.” He is known for sardonic, literary lyrics, and a range of musical styles, paired with rock instrumentation.

It’s catchy and sophisticated, where melodies take thrilling left turns and pre-choruses give way to instrumental interludes. One minute Biali is soaring over a bluesy storm of handclaps and hard-charging keyboard riffs, the next she is pouring out her soul on an impassioned, slow-burning plea for empathy. It’s pop music, but the experimental, distinctly human variety. She’ll be accompanied by Jon May on drums and Kodi Hutchinson on bass.

Laura Love

Laura Love

After taking nearly a decade off, to live off-grid, grow her own food, and raise her daughter, Laura exploded back onto the 2017 festival scene. With her stellar guitarist, Terry Hunt, she showcased a whole new batch of songs that left audiences leaping to their feet, mid-set. She has expanded her story-rich, socially conscious repertoire to include field hollers, civil rights era songs and gospel music into her deep catalogue of original songs. Media have struggled to define this inimitable musician’s colorful style, which embraces bits of the blues, bluegrass, jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, and country. Laura has sometimes called her music “folk-funk,” “Afro-celtic,” or “hip-alachian.” Regardless of how she is described, Laura has an indisputable and uncanny knack for enthralling audiences from all walks of life, from octogenarians who line up to hear straight-ahead bluegrass to the pierced-and-tattooed set to their middle-aged parents.

Shaye Zadravec

Shaye Zadravec

Shaye has released a debut EP, Norway. She sings with an ease and comfort that washes over the listener. She’s not a singer-songwriter, she’s an interpreter, a singer of songs. Her talent as a vocal interpreter is apparent on her pleasing cover of Dear Elvis, a song by Cris Cuddy. The gentle tribute to The King takes on an extra resonance with a female voice, especially one as easy on the ear as Zadravec’s. Shaye will be backed by Tim Leacock, a familiar face at the Nick, having backed Tom Phillips, Tim Buckley and Catherine MacLellan among many others.
