James Keelaghan with opener Scott MacKay October 29 – SOLD OUT!
Called Canada’s finest singer-songwriter, this poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion, intent, intensity, and curiosity. Keelaghan forges his pieces with brilliantly defined craftsmanship and a monogrammed artistic vision, making him one of the most distinctive and readily identifiable voices of the Canadian scene. Armed with a songbook that has enlightened and enthralled, and been embraced, by audiences around the world, Keelaghan’s life as an artist is one that is a perpetual journey on so many levels. Most importantly it’s a journey that has invited fans of literate and layered songwriting to be a part of his artistic expeditions, some that weave their way through marvelously etched stories of a historical nature with underlying universal themes, and others that mine the depths of the soul and the emotional trails of human relations. James will be accompanied by old friend Hugh McMillan from Spirit of the West.
Oh I’ll forgive her on the day the Devil gets on his knees to pray… With one dark, cold and chilling line you are introduced to the simple, elegant music of Scott MacKay. MacKay’s country-ish songs are standouts, riddled with one-liners that catch the sun like a freshly polished cleaver. His album Twin features fiddle, banjo and the haunting harmonies of Scott’s twin brother, Ben. With a unique voice that croons and swoons, Scott is dark and light, new but old, a bit of Johnny Cash with threads of Roy Orbison woven into the mystery of a Ray Bradbury novel.

Jayme Stone: Two-time Juno-winning banjoist and composer Jayme Stone makes music inspired by sounds from around the world, bridging folk, jazz and chamber music. The Lomax Project: An acetate disc-cutter and cactus needle stylus. The rutted roads of eastern Kentucky and the Georgia Sea Island coastline. Kitchen din and street noise. Songs everyone has come to know— and the storied singers nearly everyone has forgotten. These snapshots guided banjo innovator and musical instigator Jayme Stone to research and recast nineteen carefully chosen songs collected by iconic American folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax. With band mates, Moira Smiley, Sumaia Jackson and Joe Phillips, he revives, recycles and re-imagines traditional music. Their repertoire includes Bahamian sea chanties, African-American acappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands, ancient Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes and work songs collected from both well-known musicians and everyday folk: sea captains, cowhands, fishermen, prisoners and homemakers.
