The Young Novelists are a five-piece, folk-roots band, formed in August 2009. When they first met, Graydon James and Laura Spink had no idea that they would be married one day, much less touring the world together as The Young Novelists. Their previous album made us strangers landed them a 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year and a nomination for Vocal Group of the Year. The Toronto-based band decided to travel out of the city and into small-town Ontario in order to connect the two places. Their third album In City & Country features songs about 10 small towns in Ontario that tell the universal stories of both parallels while highlighting the differences, similarities, and everything in-between. The Young Novelists create contemporary folk songs that marry their effortless harmonies with darkly poetic lyrics and exquisitely crafted hooks.
Calgary-born songwriter Kris Demeanor delights in exposing the underbelly of western Canadian culture—gambling, drug use, murder, religion, the suburbs. His six CDs of original work explore the darkness and absurdity of these corners of Alberta life. He has become a fixture of Calgary’s spoken word, theatre and music communities, and served a term as poet laureate of Calgary from 2012 to 2014. Kris’ work has appeared in magazines like Alberta Views and Canadian Geographic. In 2009 he was awarded the Best New Magazine Writer Award for his feature piece ‘Get a Real Job’ in Unlimited.

Dan Bern is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and painter. He is convincing, funny and timely, with an unassuming tip of the hat to the spirits of past greats, all while sounding fresh and original. Dan’s songs pack a punch, and are engaging and often cinematic. His music has been compared to that of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs and Elvis Costello. Bern’s song Talkin’ Woody, Bob, Bruce, and Dan Blues, from the album Smartie Mine, offers a joking take on this influence, in the style of a Guthrie or Dylan talking blues song, and containing a spoof of a Springsteen song as well. When asked about the similarity between himself and Dylan, he once quipped, “I guess Bob Dylan was sort of the Dan Bern of the ‘60s.” He is known for sardonic, literary lyrics, and a range of musical styles, paired with rock instrumentation.
Amy Bishop’s voice is a combination of smooth pavement and rough gravel, with the ability to charm listeners with her sweet tones; yet stun audiences and hit any high note. Amy appeared on the inaugural season of CTV’s The Launch where she dazzled all of Canada with her amazing performances. Hailing from Calgary, Amy began her music career around camp fires, at block parties, and in church choir. Knowing a career in music is no guarantee, Amy decided to practice other trades, but her passion for music prevailed, leading her to collaborations with Moby and opening for April Wine, Farmer’s Daughter, and Chris Cummings. Amy has an instinctive ability to craft stories into song and deliver them with sincerity and beauty.

It’s catchy and sophisticated, where melodies take thrilling left turns and pre-choruses give way to instrumental interludes. One minute Biali is soaring over a bluesy storm of handclaps and hard-charging keyboard riffs, the next she is pouring out her soul on an impassioned, slow-burning plea for empathy. It’s pop music, but the experimental, distinctly human variety. She’ll be accompanied by Jon May on drums and Kodi Hutchinson on bass.
Andrea Nixon earned an Edmonton Music Award nomination for 2018 Country Recording of the Year. Her debut album, Diary of a Housewife, documents her rise as a critically acclaimed independent singer/songwriter, while balancing the demands of managing a family. Her stories leave no stone unturned in exploring the landscape of heartache, angst,
joy and humour with eyes wide open and heart in hand. Strikingly modern, she seamlessly combines traditional country elements with, at key moments, rough-edged pop and rock. Tying it all together is Nixon’s irresistible, unaffected voice capable of raging, expressing deep sorrow and exuding pure charm.

After taking nearly a decade off, to live off-grid, grow her own food, and raise her daughter, Laura exploded back onto the 2017 festival scene. With her stellar guitarist, Terry Hunt, she showcased a whole new batch of songs that left audiences leaping to their feet, mid-set. She has expanded her story-rich, socially conscious repertoire to include field hollers, civil rights era songs and gospel music into her deep catalogue of original songs. Media have struggled to define this inimitable musician’s colorful style, which embraces bits of the blues, bluegrass, jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, and country. Laura has sometimes called her music “folk-funk,” “Afro-celtic,” or “hip-alachian.” Regardless of how she is described, Laura has an indisputable and uncanny knack for enthralling audiences from all walks of life, from octogenarians who line up to hear straight-ahead bluegrass to the pierced-and-tattooed set to their middle-aged parents.
Shaye has released a debut EP, Norway. She sings with an ease and comfort that washes over the listener. She’s not a singer-songwriter, she’s an interpreter, a singer of songs. Her talent as a vocal interpreter is apparent on her pleasing cover of Dear Elvis, a song by Cris Cuddy. The gentle tribute to The King takes on an extra resonance with a female voice, especially one as easy on the ear as Zadravec’s. Shaye will be backed by Tim Leacock, a familiar face at the Nick, having backed Tom Phillips, Tim Buckley and Catherine MacLellan among many others.
