The Small Glories

The Small Glories

Their newest CD, Assiniboine & The Red, has been nominated for four 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards; Contemporary Album of the Year, English Songwriter of the Year, Vocal Group of the Year and Ensemble of the Year.  The album was selected as Album of the Year by the Penguin Eggs magazine critic’s poll.  Just this week The Small Glories were honored at the international New Orleans Folk Alliance Convention as 2019 Artist of the Year.  The Small Glories are Cara Luft & JD Edwards, a musical tour-de-force partnership planted on the Canadian Prairies. These veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear, rooms shrink, and audiences feel as they are right there on the stage with the band — writing the songs, living the songs, performing the songs. It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing, dancing, crying, or caught up in a good ol’ fashioned sing-along. The material of a Small Glories concert is welcoming in terms of subject, folk-pop melody and instrumentation — songs of love, loss, and the environment, delivered with soaring, interwoven vocals on stomping clawhammer banjo, guitar and harmonica.

Orit Shimoni

Orit Shimoni

Orit Shimoni decided to live out of a suitcase so she could pursue touring and recording with her entire focus. She has been officially ‘on the road’ for nearly nine years, no fixed address. With her recent release of a ninth album, and the tenth on the way, Orit’s songs and performances draw diverse audiences into her profound and universal themes and her storytelling talent. Orit is a truly unique and prolific artist. In a sea of predictable writing and pretty voices, she stands out as a special force with important relatable messages, and a disarming sense of humour.

Harry Manx

Harry Manx

Come celebrate the Nick’s 40th birthday with Mississippi blues man Harry Manx, who creates musical short stories that wed the tradition of the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. Harry studied in India with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, inventor of the 20-string Mohan Veena, which has become Harry’s signature instrument. Harry is the recipient of seven Maple Blues awards, six Juno nominations and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Solo Artist. A successful touring performer, Manx has brought his breathtaking solo shows across Canada and into the USA, Australia and Europe. He has appeared at many prestigious festivals, world class theaters, concert halls and infamous blues clubs around the globe. Playing the Mohan Veena, lap steel, harmonica, stomp box and banjo, Manx quickly envelops the audience into what has been dubbed “the Harry Zone” with his warm vocals and the hauntingly beautiful melodies of his original songs.

Harry Knight

Harry Knight

At 12-years old, Harry Knight has performed around the world and is an accomplished flamenco guitarist. At 8 he took flamenco guitar classes in Spain for 5 weeks. Last year he performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Harry says: “At first I was going to do the drums, when I was 41⁄2 years old, but I decided at the last minute to go with guitar. I like the tone, the culture of the Spanish music, how everyone enjoys it. It’s warm and reallycbright at the same time.” This spring, Harry will record his first CD with former members of Jesse Cook’s band.

John Wort Hannam

John Wort Hannam

In 2001, John Wort Hannam quit his teaching job and spent 10 months at his kitchen table, wearing a lucky hat, writing his first ten songs. Those songs would become his first recording, Pocket Full Of Holes.  Seven recordings later he has a few feathers in that lucky hat.  Feathers that include a JUNO nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Album of the Year, a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award and a Kerrville Texas New Folk Win.  On Acres Of Elbow Room, John has further found his lyrical style.  He has the same lucky hat but a new sound. With his firecracker band – Jason Valleau on upright bass, Jon May on drums, Scott Duncan on fiddle and Stephen Fletcher on keys, John is making waves in a new soundscape. He’s spent years learning the craft of songwriting and is taking those tools to write some of his most personal songs.

Emily Triggs

Emily Triggs

She has performed with Magnolia Buckskin, The House Doctors, and The Fallen Angel Band. Her solo debut album When Guinevere Went Under, takes you on a journey through influences and experiences that span the Deep South with the likes of Leadbelly, through Texas blues, strains from the Appalachian Mountains to her early years in French Canada. In her just released album, Middletown, she shares stories with endearing simplicity and emotional depth. Emily engages the listener, her music grips the heart and elevates the soul. Her songs are double edged, unapologetic and a unique sound in the genre of folk/roots.

David Francey

David Francey

David Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter. He grew to understand the people while working for decades in Toronto train yards, the Yukon bush, and as a carpenter in the Eastern Townships, all the while writing poetry, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked. A truly authentic folk singer, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s, his wife, artist Beth Girdler, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999. Since then, he has released eleven albums and won three Juno Awards. In concert David is a singer and a storyteller. His wry humour and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following.

Amy Bishop

Amy Bishop

Amy Bishop’s voice is a combination of smooth pavement and rough gravel, who charms listeners with her sweet tones yet stuns audiences with the ability to hit any high note. Amy appeared on the inaugural season of CTV’s The Launch where she dazzled all of Canada with her amazing performances. Hailing from Calgary, Amy began her music career around
campfires, at block parties, and in church choir. Knowing a career in music is no guarantee, Amy decided to practice other trades, but her passion for music prevailed, leading her to collaborations with Moby and opening for April Wine, Farmer’s Daughter, and Chris Cummings. Amy has an instinctive ability to craft stories into song and deliver them with sincerity and beauty.
